Lar Lubovitch is one of America’s foremost dancemakers, with work spanning the worlds of ballet (including his full-length Othello at American Ballet Theatre this spring), Broadway (Into the Woods, The Red Shoes) and even Olympic skating – with ice dances choreographed for medal-winners including Peggy Fleming, Dorothy Hamill and John Curry.
The Lubovitch company’s 39th Anniversary Season, April 17-21, features three premieres of new Lubovitch works that explore an intriguing range of moods and musical styles. There’s the world premiere of Little Rhapsodies, a series of character studies set to piano etudes by Robert Schumann – and accompanied live by concert pianist Pedja Muzijevic.
The company premiere of Loves’ Stories moves to a jazz beat, with Lubovitch spinning tales of passion and heartbreak to singer Kurt Elling’s unique interpretations of classic American love songs. Another world premiere, Dvořák Serenade, features lush, sculptural patterns inspired by that composer’s romantic Op. 22 for strings. On April 19 and 20, Limón Dance Company will join Lubovitch to perform his Recordare, a colorful, celebratory work themed around Mexico’s Day of the Dead, and danced to a modernist score by Elliot Goldenthal.
Company members for 2007 include: Jonathan Alsberry, Jay Franke, Charlie Neshyba-Hodges, Drew Jacoby, Charlaine Katsuyoshi, Marty Lawson, Karen More, Scott Rink, Kevin Scarpin, Kate Skarpetowska, Sean Stewart, Harumi Terayama, and Rasta Thomas.
