40th anniversary tour

The Lar Lubovitch Dance Company turns 40 this year – and we will celebrate this milestone with our first US tour since 1995. With a roster of more than 20 engagements, our 40th anniversary tour will provide audiences around the country with the opportunity to see Lubovitch masterworks performed by our "exquisitely talented company" (New York Magazine).

The company’s tour begins in late June with a special preview appearance at the American Dance Festival in Durham, North Carolina, then has its official kick-off with a one-week residency at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival (July 2-6).

In August, we will join nearly a dozen leading dance companies appearing at the Chicago Dancing Festival (an important new festival established last year by Lar Lubovitch), followed by a fall itinerary including engagements in Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dallas, Madison (WI), Minneapolis, Salt Lake City, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Tucson. There is also a special international engagement in Neuss, Germany. For winter, we will launch a second leg of the tour in January/February 2009, with stops in Philadelphia, Aspen, Bellingham (WA), Portland, San Francisco, Seattle and Vail. Click here for a full list of tour dates and venues.

Aside from our tour dates, the Lubovitch company will share our anniversary with a series of performances for our New York City audiences. In early September, we will appear at “Evening Stars,” the Joyce Theater’s outdoors program in Battery Park (date tba). Next, Dance Theater Workshop will present a week-long retrospective featuring three of Lar Lubovitch’s pioneering works from the 1970s, set to Minimalist scores by Steve Reich and Philip Glass (Sept. 30-Oct. 4). Then comes our 40th anniversary season at New York City Center (Nov. 5-9), with our opening night gala on Wednesday, Nov. 5, and our company’s first New York City performances in more than 15 years of Lubovitch’s acclaimed dance Concerto Six Twenty Two.

Concerto will also be featured on tour, along with Men’s Stories and a selection of other works from our repertoire of more than 100 Lubovitch dances. Concerto and Men’s Stories have won special awards of tour support, from American Masterpieces: Dance and the National Dance Project (respectively), two very competitive grant programs administered by the New England Foundation for the Arts – the first time any dance company has ever received simultaneous touring support from both of these programs.
